Edward Jean Steichen
In Exaltation of Flowers

About

While Edward Steichen was known for his photography, he was also an accomplished painter early in his career. Steichen’s work in fashion photography and floral paintings coincide in the seven panels of In Exaltation of Flowers. Commissioned by Agnes and Eugene Meyer for their Park Avenue townhouse, In Exaltation of Flowers celebrates the artistic lives of the Meyer family and their close friends. Each figure is painted with flowers thought to echo their characters, transforming the work into a deeply personal reflection of the creative circle.

Partner Story

A new partnership between neighbors in Florida

An unprecedented collaboration between the Mennello Museum of American Art (MMMA) and the Orlando Museum of Art (OMA) was born out of a barrier. The project began with a simple request from MMMA to Art Bridges to borrow Edward Steichen’s seven-panel mural series, In Exaltation of Flowers (1910-13). As the mechanics of the loan got underway, it was determined that some of the mural panels were too large to fit in the MMAA galleries. The team’s great disappointment spurred their creativity.
