Mystery Woman

The “Mystery Woman” is a frequent motif in Fritz Scholder’s work. In this series of paintings and sculptures of which this small bust is a part of, the woman’s body is exposed, while her face is constantly masked. Her anonymity, however, leaves a sense of allure. Her skin is rendered in undulating touches, reflecting not only Scholder’s loose brushwork in his corresponding paintings but also his deftness in multiple mediums.
