About

In the spring of 2024, the Delaware Art Museum (DelArt) hosted "There Is a Woman in Every Color: Black Women in Art," a traveling exhibition featuring works from Bowdoin College Museum of Art alongside pieces from DelArt’s own collection. The exhibition was complemented by the latest iteration of Shakira Hunt’s photographic series Bring Me My Flowers—Soft Petals, which explored Black womanhood through mixed-media photography, dried flowers, and video. The work was prominently displayed in the museum’s Orientation Gallery, and to activate it, DelArt and Hunt hosted an artist-designed dinner titled Petals & Palates, offering a shared meal and guided exploration of the installation.

Intended Outcome

The Delaware Art Museum hoped to amplify the artistic contributions of Black women in the arts, and to accomplish this goal, the museum expected to bring in 12,000 visitors to see the community commission.

Actual Outcome

Overall, the funded programming for this exhibition was successful in engaging local and regional audiences and BIPOC artists like Shakira Hunt in a new and meaningful way. Over 30,000 visitors saw the installed work, and 60 community members enjoyed Petals & Palates.

Advice Post Project

Be cognizant of where and how community art is displayed and promoted.Placing the installation in a prominent gallery allowed more visitors to view and appreciate work by a local BIPOC artist. The museum relied on its commissioned artists’ social media accounts, various websites, and community calendars to bring a diverse audience to the museum.
