About

The Carolyn Campagna Kleefeld Contemporary Art Museum in Long Beach, California, hosted an interdisciplinary program that explored LGBTQ experiences through music, performance, dance, health science, and the humanities. A keynote and panelists addressed HIV stigma and related cultural and historical factors, while a collaboration with health professionals produced a lasting LGBTQ health and wellness resource guide. The program also featured a folklórico dance performance, a drag makeup tutorial, and a collage workshop, creating inclusive entry points for dialogue around self-care, identity, and resilience.

Intended Outcome

The museum hoped to raise awareness about barriers to LGBTQ well-being and LGBTQ wellness resources and cultivate a sense of welcome and belonging for the LGBTQ and ally community at the museum.

Estimated Attendance: 300

Actual Outcome

The Carolyn Campagna Kleefeld Contemporary Art Museum provided 100-plus participants with LGBTQ+ educational wellness resources, cultivated community, facilitated discussions that increased awareness of LGBTQ stories, and fostered a sense of welcome and belonging for members of the LGBTQ+ community.

Advice Post Project

Museums can deepen community engagement and foster inclusivity by designing interdisciplinary programs that address social and public health issues through a blend of art, performance, and dialogue. Partnering with health professionals and community leaders to develop lasting resources and incorporate interactive, culturally resonant elements—such as live performances and hands-on workshops—invites broader participation and creates meaningful access points into complex topics.
