About

Kicking off this three-hour community event, which was developed and facilitated by two college students, was a brief talk about the Indigenous history of Connecticut. Then, visitors engaged with Julie Buffalohead’s painting through guided close looking sessions, reflection prompts displayed on tables, a short film, and a hands-on activity. The experience touched on the themes of the painting, including the significance of animal iconography for Indigenous storytelling, the history of American Indian residential schools in the US and Canada, and the identification of ribbon work patterns and other symbols in the artwork. Participants enjoyed conversation, music, artmaking, and food during this immersive experience and went home with a memory bead necklace to remember the occasion.

Intended Outcome

The Housatonic Museum of Art hoped to reach 125 visitors through this activity. It also wanted to increase campus involvement and connectivity among students at Connecticut State Community College, a newly formed multi-campus institution.

Actual Outcome

The Housatonic Museum of Art reached 100 visitors, increased campus involvement between Connecticut State Community College and CT State Manchester, and enhanced cross-campus communication. The event also provided valuable professional development for two college interns.

Advice Post Project

When working across multiple campuses or institutions, start building partnerships early and identify committed collaborators who understand their students’ needs. While logistical support like transportation is helpful, consider flexible scheduling and shorter programming to accommodate students who balance work, classes, and family responsibilities. Even if turnout varies, investing in cross-campus communication builds long-term connections and lays the groundwork for deeper engagement in the future.
