In this storytime program focused on Richard Diebenkorn's "Cityscape #3", the Wichita Art Museum partnered with two local creatives—a music educator and a theater performer—to engage early childhood visitors and their caretakers in a participatory and interdisciplinary experience. In addition to the reading of a related story, children and their caregivers engaged in a music activity and a theater-based activity inspired by Diebenkorn’s painting.
WAM’s goal was to reach 60 visitors by offering innovative, in-gallery experiences with a work of art for early learners, ages 3-5, and their families.
WAM engaged 43 young learners and their caregivers, and there was a high level of physical participation from both the kids and adults.
If you are trying to do something new with an audience you don’t typically work with, partner with professionals who know those audiences well. WAM wanted to increase museum interest for early learners and their caregivers, and to make this possible, it partnered with local creatives and seasoned facilitators.
