Brad KahlhamerThin Dead Figure

Allan Houser (Chiricahua Apache) is one of the most renowned Native American artists of the twentieth century. Invited to lead the sculpture department at the newly created Institute of American Indian Arts in 1962, Houser launched himself into a decades-long exploration of three-dimensional work in media like marble, bronze, and wood. Untitled reflects his innovative fusion of modernist organic forms with a personal iconography that alludes to Indigenous imagery and history. The work, produced toward the end of his life, exemplifies the biomorphic abstract language of his mature production.
