The work of Susan Hudson (Navajo/Diné) addresses contemporary topics of social and political relevance through quilting, an art form taught to the artist by her mother. You Are Not the Problem, The Homophobes Are explicitly foregrounds the plight of Indigenous peoples in their fight for the right to self-determination, particularly the rights of those persecuted by homophobia, a stance which contradicts traditional attitudes that afford space and honor to those who do not adhere to colonial binaries of gender and sexuality. The work literally threads together the history of oppression suffered by Indigenous communities and the harassment endured to this day by people who refuse settler conformity.
