About

The Hyde Collection mounted the exhibition, "Richard Estes: Urban Landscapes," and created an immersive experience to go along with it. An in-gallery urban design activity, using sound systems and 3D building models, invited visitors to envision their own urban landscape. They were encouraged to arrange and rearrange the models to make new cityscapes throughout the duration of the exhibition, and The Hyde created a timelapse of the experience, which remains available on itsYouTube channel.

Intended Outcome

The Hyde Collection sought to enhance visitor engagement by integrating interactive technology in to its exhibitions, fostering educational opportunities that cater to diverse learning modalities, strengthening its identity as a leading contemporary art institution, and welcoming 1,725 visitors to engage with its urban design activity.

Actual Outcome

The 3D city models facilitated deeper visitor participation, triggering more discussions and extending time spent in the gallery. Overall, 1,800 visitors (37%) interacted with the urban design activity.

Advice Post Project

To encourage visitors to spend more time in a gallery, incorporate interactive and multisensory elements that bridge traditional educational formats with more immersive, innovative engagement. This could include soundscapes or technology-driven experiences. Understanding visitor preferences and comfort levels allows museums to create environments that are both inviting and stimulating, ultimately deepening the impact of the overall experience and increasing the duration of visits.
